2014 Ford Escape Oil Reset: The Steps Ford’s Manual Won’t Link
Turn the ignition to on without starting the engine. Press the accelerator and brake together and hold both fully down. At three seconds the display reads Service: Oil reset in prog.
Keep holding. At twenty five seconds it reads Service: Oil reset complete, and only then can you release.
Your own manual names this procedure and then won’t link to it
I opened Ford’s own online 2014 Escape Owner’s Manual, not a scanned PDF, the live reference at fordservicecontent.com. The Normal Scheduled Maintenance page tells you to reset the monitor after every oil change. It points to a page called Oil Change Indicator Reset.
That cross-reference does not resolve. Neither does a second one a few pages earlier, worded differently, called Resetting the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor. Two names for the same procedure, in the same manual, and neither one opens.
The Engine Oil Check page, the obvious place to look next, only covers the dipstick. It sends you back to the same broken reference.
The steps exist. They are printed in full on page 227 of the 2013 and 2014 Ford Escape Owner’s Manuals. Both are the same third generation with the same monitor hardware. Ford just never wired the online reader’s link to that page.
The method that does not exist on your Escape, and why it keeps showing up in search results
Search for a Ford Escape oil reset and one answer dominates: open Settings, then Vehicle, then Oil Life, hold OK.
That path is real. It belongs to a 2017 or newer Escape.
I checked your Escape’s own Information Messages page directly. The Engine oil change due entry links only to Engine Oil Check, the dipstick page. There is no Vehicle submenu and no Oil Life menu item anywhere in the 2014 manual’s own navigation. The 2013 and 2016 manuals confirm the same gap for this generation.
If you are hunting your steering wheel menu for an Oil Life option, stop. It was not built into this generation. Yearless guides illustrated with a newer dashboard are why that method keeps surfacing for a 2014 search.

Applies to the 2014 Ford Escape, all trims, all three engines.
If your Escape has push-button start: press the START button once without touching the brake pedal. That wakes the electronics to accessory power.
Then run steps 2 through 7. To finish, press START again to switch off completely.
Pressing the brake while you press START on a keyless Escape starts the engine instead. That cancels the reset before it begins.
Why there is no percentage to check
A 2012 or earlier Escape shows OIL LIFE XXX% on the message centre. A 2017 or newer Escape shows Remaining Life as a percent in the steering wheel menu.
Your 2014 shows neither. The 2013 to 2016 generation gives you a message when oil is due, and nothing before that.
Service: Oil reset complete disappearing from the display is your only confirmation the reset took. There is no second way to check it.
Which oil does a 2014 Escape actually take

Two independent capacity databases, automobile-catalog.com and enginehungry.com, agree with Ford’s own numbers on all three engines. A bottle marked 5W-20 or 5W-30 alone does not confirm it meets Ford’s WSS spec. Check the label for the WSS number before you buy.

Which engine is in your 2014 Escape
The badge on the liftgate does not name the engine. Ford paired engines to trim like this: the base S came with the 2.5L.
The SE was available with either the 1.6L EcoBoost or the 2.5L. The Titanium came with the 2.0L EcoBoost.
If you are not sure, open the hood. The under-hood emissions label lists the displacement. The engine oil filler cap is also marked for the 1.6L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines.

How often the message should actually appear
Ford’s Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor calculates the interval from how you drive, not a fixed mileage. Normal commuting runs 7,500 to 10,000 miles (12,000 to 16,000 km) between messages.
Moderate towing, mountainous or off-road driving, or extended idling drops that to 5,000 to 7,500 miles (8,000 to 12,000 km). Maximum load, towing or extreme temperature use drops it further, to 3,000 to 5,000 miles (5,000 to 8,000 km).
Ford caps every tier at one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km), whichever comes first. That is Ford’s own hard limit from the Normal Scheduled Maintenance page, not a rule of thumb.
If the display resets prematurely or stops working, fall back to a fixed interval. That is six months or 5,000 miles (8,000 km) from your last change.
The reset went through but the message came back in a day or two
That is not a failed reset. It means the pedal sequence never completed. Almost every failure here is releasing at the three-second message instead of the twenty five-second one.
Count the seconds out loud. Twenty five seconds with your foot fully down on both pedals reads much longer than it is.
A shop reset at the counter, then reset again by you, produces the same symptom with no fault at all. The monitor keeps no record you can inspect on a 2014, so ask the shop directly rather than assuming.
