Ford Expedition Oil Capacity Chart By Year & Engine (1997–2026)

The Ford Expedition oil capacity chart shows that most models need either 6.0 US quarts (5.7 liters) or 7.0 US quarts (6.6 liters) of engine oil when the filter is changed. The correct amount depends on the model year: 1997–2004 Expeditions generally use 6.0 quarts, 2005–2014 models use 7.0 quarts, and 2015–2026 EcoBoost models return to 6.0 quarts.

The 5W-30 entries for 1997–2000 reflect the original owner’s manuals. Ford later issued service guidance approving 5W-20 for many earlier applications. See the oil-grade discussion below before changing viscosity on an older engine.

Quick lookup: A 2004 Expedition with either original V8 takes 6.0 quarts; a 2010 Expedition 5.4L takes 7.0 quarts; a 2024 Expedition 3.5L EcoBoost takes 6.0 quarts. These amounts assume an oil-filter change. Confirm the installed engine if your vehicle has had an engine swap.

Why Expedition Oil Capacity Changed in 2005 and 2015

The two major shifts are easy to miss because the Expedition kept the same model name while its engines changed.

The 2005 V8 Capacity Increase

The 2004 Expedition’s 4.6L and 5.4L V8 engines both have a 6.0-quart service-fill specification. Ford’s 2004 Expedition owner’s guide lists that quantity in its refill-capacities section.

Recommended Best Deal Products

For 2005, Ford specified 7.0 quarts with an oil-filter change for the updated 5.4L V8. The 2005 Expedition owner’s guide confirms the new amount. That 7.0-quart figure continues through the 2014 model year.

The distinction matters if you maintain two Expeditions from different years. Don’t assume every vehicle carrying a 5.4L badge needs the same quantity.

The 2015 EcoBoost Capacity Change

The 2015 Expedition switched from the naturally aspirated 5.4L V8 to the 3.5L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6. Its specified refill quantity dropped from 7.0 to 6.0 quarts, and the recommended viscosity changed from 5W-20 to 5W-30.

Ford’s 2015 Expedition owner’s manual lists 6.0 quarts and Ford oil specification WSS-M2C946-A. Later EcoBoost model years retain the six-quart service-fill quantity, although the required WSS oil specification may differ.

Which Engine Oil Grade Fits Your Expedition

Oil capacity and oil viscosity are separate specifications. Buying six quarts of the wrong grade does not make it suitable for your Expedition.

Early 4.6L and 5.4L V8 Engines

Original 1997–2000 Expedition manuals specify SAE 5W-30, while the 2001–2004 manuals specify SAE 5W-20. Ford also published a later service bulletin recommending SAE 5W-20 for many earlier gasoline-engine applications. That is why some oil catalogs recommend 5W-20 for a late-1990s Expedition even though its original owner’s manual says 5W-30.

For an older vehicle, check the original engine, applicable Ford service guidance, and the condition of the engine. Don’t choose viscosity solely from a generic internet chart.

2005 to 2014 Triton V8 Engines

The 5.4L V8 in this period uses SAE 5W-20 and has a seven-quart refill capacity. Its Ford WSS specification was updated during the production run: for example, the 2005 manual lists WSS-M2C930-A, while the 2014 manual lists WSS-M2C945-A.

Check the oil container against your exact year rather than assuming one WSS number covers the entire decade.

2015 to 2026 EcoBoost V6 Engines

The 3.5L EcoBoost uses SAE 5W-30. The 2015 owner’s manual specifies WSS-M2C946-A; the 2020 owner’s information lists WSS-M2C946-B1; and the 2021 and 2024 manuals list WSS-M2C961-A1. These examples show why the viscosity alone is not the full specification.

Our Ford engine oil recommendation chart explains the broader Ford oil-grade and WSS system. Use your Expedition’s own manual as the final authority for the applicable specification.

How to Identify Your Expedition Year and Engine

Select your capacity only after confirming the SUV’s year and installed engine.

  1. Confirm the model year. Check your registration, vehicle identification records, or the manufacturer’s certification information. The purchase year and model year are not always the same.
  2. Identify the engine. Compare the engine identification information in the owner’s documentation with the engine actually installed. Early Expeditions could have a 4.6L or 5.4L V8; later models used a 5.4L V8 and then a 3.5L EcoBoost V6.
  3. Match the chart row. Use the model year and engine together, then confirm the service-fill capacity in the owner’s manual. An engine replacement can make the original model-year specification unsuitable.

For a newer SUV, our 2024 Ford Expedition engine and trim guide explains the available configurations. A trim or package name is not a substitute for identifying the engine.

Does Expedition MAX Need a Different Oil Capacity

No extra engine oil is required simply because the SUV is an Expedition MAX. The MAX name identifies an extended-length body, not a larger engine crankcase.

Ford’s 2026 Expedition technical specifications list 6.0 quarts with the filter for both the standard 3.5L EcoBoost and the 3.5L High-Output EcoBoost. The information applies to the listed engines whether the SUV has the standard or extended body.

The same principle applies when comparing trims such as Active, Platinum, King Ranch and Tremor. First confirm the model year and engine. Don’t mistake the MAX’s larger fuel tank for a larger engine oil capacity.

Which Motorcraft Oil Filter Fits Your Expedition

Ford’s original part listings identify Motorcraft FL-820-S for the 4.6L and 5.4L V8 engines in the early and middle model years, including the 2004 and 2013 Expeditions. The 2015 EcoBoost manual identifies Motorcraft FL-500-S, and Ford’s 2026 owner information also lists FL-500-S.

These are useful reference numbers, not a promise of fitment for an engine-swapped or modified SUV. Confirm the correct replacement filter for your vehicle’s engine and model year before installation.

How to Confirm Oil Level After Refilling

The figures in the chart assume that old engine oil has been drained and the oil filter replaced. They are not instructions to pour six or seven quarts into an engine that is already partly full.

Recommended Best Deal Products
  1. Park level and secure the SUV. After the engine is shut off, follow your model-year manual’s waiting period so oil can drain back into the pan. The 2015 manual specifies a 15-minute wait for its engine-oil check.
  2. Check the dipstick. Remove it carefully, wipe it clean, reinsert it completely, and pull it out again. Read the oil level against the MIN and MAX indicators or the marked holes.
  3. Add oil gradually if needed. If the reading is below the acceptable range, use the specified oil and add a small amount at a time. Recheck before adding more.
  4. Verify the final reading. Keep the oil within the indicated range, reinstall the filler cap and dipstick, and check for leaks after service. If the level is above MAX, correct the overfill rather than assuming a high reading is harmless.

A numerical capacity is a starting point for a service refill. The dipstick and the manufacturer’s checking procedure determine whether the level is correct.

Which Oil Capacity Should You Use

The Ford Expedition oil capacity chart shows three practical service-fill periods: 6.0 quarts for 1997–2004, 7.0 quarts for 2005–2014, and 6.0 quarts for 2015–2026. The 2005 change relates to the updated 5.4L V8, while the 2015 change accompanies the switch to the 3.5L EcoBoost.

Match your exact year and engine before buying oil. For early V8s, pay attention to the difference between original manual viscosity and later Ford service guidance. For EcoBoost models, confirm the correct Ford WSS specification rather than relying on 5W-30 alone. Finally, check the dipstick using the procedure for your Expedition before considering the oil change complete.

What Ford Expedition Oil Capacity Questions Are Common

How Much Oil Does a 5.4L Ford Expedition Take

A 5.4L Expedition generally takes 6.0 quarts with a filter for 1997–2004 or 7.0 quarts for 2005–2014. The model year matters, even when the engine displacement is the same. Check your owner’s manual before refilling.

How Many Quarts Does a 3.5L EcoBoost Expedition Need

Ford Expedition models with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 use 6.0 US quarts (5.7 liters) with a new oil filter in the 2015–2026 model years covered here. Use the correct SAE 5W-30 oil meeting the Ford specification for your year.

Does Ford Expedition Oil Capacity Include the Filter

Yes. The capacities in this chart include changing the engine oil filter. They are service refill quantities rather than dry-engine fill specifications or amounts to add during a routine top-off.

What Oil Does a 2026 Ford Expedition Use

The 2026 Ford Expedition uses 6.0 quarts of engine oil with a filter change for both its standard and High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost engines. Use SAE 5W-30 oil meeting the specification shown in the 2026 owner’s manual and verify the final dipstick level.

Does the Ford Expedition MAX Require More Engine Oil

No, not just because it is a MAX. The longer body and larger fuel tank do not determine the engine oil refill quantity. Match the exact year and engine; for the 2026 EcoBoost configurations, Ford lists 6.0 quarts with the filter.
