Ford Focus Oil Capacity Chart by Engine and Year 2000-2018
The Ford Focus oil capacity chart depends on the model year and engine. A 2004 Focus with the 2.0L SPI takes 4.0 US quarts with a new oil filter, while the 2018 Focus ST takes 5.7 quarts. Using a capacity from another Focus engine can leave yours underfilled or overfilled.
The tables below cover U.S.-market gasoline Ford Focus models from 2000 through 2018, including the SVT, ST, and RS. Match the year and engine first. All listed quantities are service refills with an oil filter change, not dry-engine capacities. Oil for the all-electric Focus Electric is not included.

Use the US quarts column when buying oil in the United States. Liters reflect the quantities published in Ford documentation; a tilde (~) marks a rounded US-quart conversion from a metric figure.
2000 to 2004 Ford Focus Oil Capacity
| Model year | U.S. engine or trim | Oil with filter, US qt | Liters | SAE oil grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 2.0L SPI | 4.0 | 3.78 | 5W-30 |
| 2000 | 2.0L Zetec | 4.5 | 4.25 | 5W-30 |
| 2001 | 2.0L SPI | 4.0 | 3.78 | 5W-20 |
| 2001 | 2.0L Zetec | 4.5 | 4.25 | 5W-20 |
| 2002 | 2.0L SPI | 4.0 | 3.78 | 5W-20 |

| 2003 | 2.0L SVT Zetec | 4.5 | 4.25 | 5W-30 |
| 2004 | 2.0L SPI | 4.0 | 3.78 | 5W-20 |
| 2004 | 2.0L Zetec | 4.5 | 4.25 | 5W-20 |
| 2004 | 2.3L Duratec | 4.54 | 4.3 | 5W-20 |
| 2004 | 2.0L SVT Zetec | 4.5 | 4.25 | 5W-30 |
Early-model notes: The SVT is a distinct high-output Zetec application and uses 5W-30, not the regular Zetec’s listed 5W-20 in those years. The 2.3L engine was not offered in every trim or market configuration. Ford printed 4.54 quarts (4.3 L) for the 2003–2004 2.3L refill; do not mistake 4.54 for engine displacement.

| 2018 | RS 2.3L EcoBoost | 5.7 | 5.4 | 5W-50 |
Conversion note: Ford’s 2017–2018 1.0L manuals give 4.6 liters, about 4.86 US quarts. The table rounds that to ~4.9 qt rather than converting Ford’s rounded gallon display back into quarts. Always check the final dipstick level.
These are U.S. gasoline-engine configurations, not a global Focus chart. European 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L, diesel, and later-generation models can use different quantities.
How 2000 to 2004 Ford Focus Engine Capacities Differ
A 2004 Focus with a 2.0L SPI uses 4.0 qt with a filter, while the 2.0L Zetec uses 4.5 qt. The displacement is the same, but the refill capacity is not. The 2004 Ford Focus owner’s guide confirms these figures and lists 4.54 qt for its 2.3L engine.
The 2000 Focus is also an oil-grade exception. Its original Ford owner’s guide specifies 5W-30 for both SPI and Zetec engines; later standard Focus guides generally call for 5W-20. The 2002–2004 SVT likewise specifies 5W-30 in its dedicated supplement. Do not apply a newer Focus oil recommendation to these older applications without checking the correct manual.
What Changed for 2005 to 2011 Ford Focus Engines
The U.S. Focus moved to 4.5 qt (4.3 L) for the 2005–2007 2.0L and 2.3L Duratec engines. The 2008–2011 U.S. models with the 2.0L engine retain that 4.5-qt service refill. Ford lists SAE 5W-20 for these applications.
This is a relatively straightforward span of the chart, but not every year offered the same engine selection. Check the engine actually installed rather than assuming the presence of a 2.3L unit from the model year alone. The next generation introduces more meaningful differences.
Which 2012 to 2018 Focus Engines Need More Oil
The standard 2.0L gasoline direct-injection (GDI) Focus generally needs 4.5 qt (4.3 L) with a new filter. But the smaller 1.0L EcoBoost does not use one consistent refill quantity across all its U.S. model years.
1.0L EcoBoost Capacity Changes
The 2015 and 2016 U.S. Focus 1.0L EcoBoost manuals specify 4.3 qt (4.1 L). Ford’s 2017 and 2018 U.S. documents instead specify 4.6 L, equivalent to approximately 4.9 US qt. Do not copy the 2016 figure into a 2017 oil-change checklist.
For engine design and ownership issues beyond fluid quantities, see our Ford Focus 1.0L EcoBoost technical guide.
2.0L GDI Standard Engine
The naturally aspirated 2.0L engine needs 4.5 qt (4.3 L) for the same routine service. Ford’s 2017 Focus owner’s manual separately states 4.3 L with a filter and 3.9 L without one. That distinction becomes important when you check the oil after refilling.
How Ford Focus ST and RS Oil Requirements Compare
The Focus ST and RS are not regular 2.0L Focus models with cosmetic trim changes. Their turbocharged engines have their own service requirements, especially oil grade.
Focus ST 2.0L EcoBoost
For 2013–2018 U.S. Focus ST models, the specified refill is 5.7 qt (5.4 L) with an oil filter change. Use SAE 5W-30 meeting the applicable Ford approval, including WSS-M2C946-A in the ST documentation reviewed here.
The ST’s 5.7-qt figure is also listed in our broader Ford 2.0L EcoBoost oil capacity chart, which compares the engine across Ford models. It is not interchangeable with the standard Focus 2.0L GDI figure of 4.5 qt.
Focus RS 2.3L EcoBoost
The 2016–2018 U.S. Focus RS also specifies 5.7 qt (5.4 L) with a filter, but uses SAE 5W-50 full-synthetic oil meeting WSS-M2C931-C in its model-year supplement.
One easily missed distinction: the 2017 Focus RS supplement specifies 5.7 qt with the filter but 5.4 qt without the filter. A chart that lists 5.4 qt without explaining the filter condition can send an owner to the wrong refill amount.
Which Oil Grade Each Ford Focus Engine Requires
Oil capacity tells you how much to add. Oil viscosity and Ford’s WSS specification tell you which oil belongs in the engine. The numbers must be checked separately.
| Engine group | Typical Ford-specified oil | Specification example |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 SPI and Zetec | SAE 5W-30 | WSS-M2C153-G |
| 2001–2004 regular SPI/Zetec | SAE 5W-20 | WSS-M2C153-H |
| 2002–2004 SVT | SAE 5W-30 | Check SVT supplement for exact year |
| 2005–2011 Duratec | SAE 5W-20 | WSS-M2C930-A on later manuals |
| 2012–2018 standard 2.0L GDI | SAE 5W-20 | WSS-M2C945-A |
| 2015–2018 1.0L EcoBoost | SAE 5W-20 | Approval varies by manual edition |
| 2013–2018 Focus ST | SAE 5W-30 | WSS-M2C946-A |
| 2016–2018 Focus RS | SAE 5W-50 | WSS-M2C931-C |
Check the exact manual edition and oil-container approval. Some revisions and later Motorcraft references use updated WSS codes. A bottle marked only “5W-20” does not by itself confirm it matches the Ford specification required for your engine.

How to Identify Your Ford Focus Engine Before Refilling

A model year alone is not always enough to choose an oil capacity, particularly on early SPI/Zetec cars and later 1.0L, ST, and RS variants.
- Confirm the model year. Check the vehicle paperwork or VIN information, not just the registration date.
- Identify the installed engine. Compare the engine designation in your owner’s manual or vehicle emissions label with the engine and trim in the table. A standard 2.0L is not the turbocharged ST 2.0L.
- Match the oil-filter condition. Use the with-filter quantity when you replace the oil filter, then confirm the finished oil level according to Ford’s dipstick procedure.
If you cannot identify the engine confidently, have a Ford parts or service professional confirm it before selecting the refill figure.
What Changes With a New Ford Focus Oil Filter
A new filter changes how much oil the engine needs during a service. Ford specifies both conditions separately in some newer manuals.
| 2017 engine | With oil filter | Without oil filter |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0L EcoBoost | 4.6 L, ~4.9 US qt | 4.4 L, ~4.7 US qt |
| 2.0L GDI | 4.3 L, ~4.5 US qt | 3.9 L, ~4.1 US qt |
| 2.3L Focus RS | 5.4 L, 5.7 US qt | 5.1 L, 5.4 US qt |
These are service refill references, not instructions to pour the entire amount in one step. Add oil carefully, allow it to settle as described in your manual, and use the dipstick to verify the level. Oil trapped in the engine during draining can affect how much fresh oil is needed to reach the correct mark.
How to Avoid 3 Common Ford Focus Oil Mistakes
Using a Different Engine’s Capacity
Do not use 4.5 qt merely because the car says Focus and has a 2.0L engine. That number fits many standard 2.0L models, but not the 2.0L ST or the older 2.0L SPI.
Choosing Oil by Viscosity Alone
Match the Ford WSS approval in addition to the SAE grade. A standard Focus and a Focus RS can require very different oils even when their model years are close.
Filling Straight to the Maximum Quantity
Treat the table as a service-fill guide and use Ford’s dipstick check for the final level. Overfilling above the MAX mark can damage the engine. After completing the oil change, follow the applicable Ford Focus oil-life reset procedure if your car has an oil-life monitor.
What to Check Before Your Ford Focus Oil Change
The Ford Focus oil capacity chart is most useful when you match four details: model year, engine, new-filter refill capacity, and approved oil grade. The early 2.0L SPI and Zetec engines differ by half a quart, the 1.0L EcoBoost refill changes between the 2016 and 2017 U.S. specifications, and the ST and RS require their own viscosity grades.
Before opening the oil bottle, read the exact row for your engine and compare it with your vehicle’s original owner’s manual. Refill gradually, check the final level, and do not substitute a dry-fill or no-filter number for a routine oil-and-filter service. That is the safest way to use any capacity chart.
Ford Focus Oil Capacity Questions by Year and Engine
How Much Oil Does a 2014 Ford Focus 2.0L Take?
The standard U.S. 2014 Focus 2.0L GDI takes 4.5 US qt (4.3 L) with an oil-filter change and specifies SAE 5W-20. The turbocharged 2014 Focus ST is a separate engine application and uses 5.7 qt instead.
How Much Oil Does a 2018 Ford Focus 1.0 EcoBoost Take?
The 2018 U.S. Focus 1.0L EcoBoost takes 4.6 L, approximately 4.9 US qt, including the oil filter. Use the model-year manual’s specified SAE 5W-20 approval and check the final dipstick level.
Is Focus ST Oil Capacity Different From the Regular Focus?
Yes. The 2013–2018 Focus ST 2.0L EcoBoost takes 5.7 qt (5.4 L) with a filter, compared with 4.5 qt (4.3 L) for the standard 2.0L GDI Focus. The ST also uses SAE 5W-30 rather than the standard engine’s 5W-20.
How Much Oil Does a 2017 Ford Focus RS Take?
The 2017 Focus RS takes 5.7 qt (5.4 L) with a new oil filter and specifies SAE 5W-50. Its 5.4-qt figure applies to a refill without changing the oil filter, not the normal oil-and-filter service.
Does Ford Focus Oil Capacity Include the Oil Filter?
Yes, every capacity in the main chart includes an oil-filter change. Where Ford supplies a separate without-filter quantity, it is smaller. Always use the correct condition and verify the actual level after refilling.
