Ford Bronco Oil Capacity Chart: 2021-2026 Year and Engine
The Ford Bronco oil capacity chart depends on the model year and engine. For 2026, the 2.3L EcoBoost takes 5.6 US quarts, the 2.7L EcoBoost takes 6.0 quarts, and the 3.0L Bronco Raptor takes 7.0 quarts, each with a new oil filter.
Earlier Broncos need a closer look. Ford’s first-print documents sometimes show different numbers from its later service-refill chart. The chart below uses Motorcraft’s July 2026 oil application reference, then explains the older figures so you can make a safe oil-change decision.

Source: Motorcraft Oil Applications and Crankcase Capacities Chart, Version 23, US, July 2026. This Ford/Motorcraft service reference lists the 2.3L Bronco at 6.0 quarts for 2021–2024 and 5.6 for 2025–2026, the 2.7L Bronco at 6.0 quarts for 2021–2026, and the 3.0L Bronco Raptor at 7.0 quarts for 2022–2026.
- Asterisk on early years: Some initial 2021 and 2022 Ford publications listed larger capacities. See the explanation below, and confirm the current service specification for your vehicle using its manual, VIN and dipstick before filling.
- Oil filter included: These figures assume an oil and filter change. Do not add the filter’s oil volume on top of the listed quantity.
- Capacity is a guide to refill quantity: The correct final oil level is determined by Ford’s checking procedure and the dipstick marks. Never force the entire listed amount into an engine that already reads full.
A Bronco’s engine matters more than its trim badge. If you do not know whether yours has the 2.3L, 2.7L or Raptor 3.0L, check the engine information under the hood or compare its original configuration using our Ford Bronco model and engine comparison chart.
How Bronco Oil Capacities Changed Between 2021 and 2026
For most owners, there are two useful patterns: the 2.3L’s service-refill figure changes for 2025, while Motorcraft’s current 2.7L refill figure stays at six quarts across the 2021–2026 model years.
2.3L EcoBoost Capacity Changes
The current Motorcraft chart lists 6.0 quarts for 2021–2024 and 5.6 quarts for 2025–2026, both with a new filter. It also specifies different Motorcraft filters: FL-910-S for the older 2.3L Bronco applications and FL-2127 for the newer ones.
That makes 2025 an important dividing line when buying oil and a filter. A product listing that says only “fits Bronco 2.3L” does not establish that the bottle count or filter fits your particular model year.
Ford’s original 2021 material shows another wrinkle: the first printing listed 6.2 quarts for the 2.3L, while the current Motorcraft service chart lists 6.0. These are different published references, not proof that every 2021 vehicle should be filled to the older number.
2.7L EcoBoost Capacity Records
Motorcraft’s current chart specifies 6.0 quarts for the 2.7L Bronco from 2021 through 2026. It lists the FL-2062-A oil filter for that engine family.
Some early Bronco manuals and discussions still mention seven quarts. Owners who encounter that information should not rely on a generic web answer or top up simply because an older publication names the larger volume.
Those conflicting publications are most relevant to 2021 and 2022 owners, particularly the early 2.7L models.
Why 2022 Bronco 2.7L Oil Capacity Sources Disagree
The 2022 Bronco 2.7L is known for conflicting published oil quantities. The September 2021 first printing of the 2022 owner’s manual listed 7.0 quarts with a new filter. Ford’s later Motorcraft application chart lists 6.0 quarts for the 2022 2.7L service refill.
The confusion did not begin in 2022. The first-print 2021 Ford Bronco owner’s manual listed 6.2 quarts for the 2.3L and 7.0 quarts for the 2.7L. Current Motorcraft service data instead gives both 2021 engines a six-quart service refill.
This is a documentation-revision issue that requires vehicle-specific confirmation. It would be misleading to describe the seven-quart figure as the correct service fill for every early 2.7L, or to claim that all these differences are merely dry-fill versus refill measurements. The published records alone do not establish either conclusion for every vehicle.
For a 2021 or 2022 Bronco with conflicting instructions:
- Identify the engine and read the oil-capacity section of the manual supplied with your Bronco.
- Compare it with the current Ford/Motorcraft service information for your VIN. An authorized Ford service department can help confirm which instructions apply.
- Change the filter, refill conservatively using the confirmed guidance, and follow the correct dipstick procedure.
- Stop if the measured level reaches the maximum mark. Do not pour in an extra quart to match an outdated chart.
If the dipstick, printed manual and updated service information do not agree, resolve that disagreement before running the engine with a questionable oil level. The 3.0L Raptor has a separate, more straightforward service-fill figure.
What Is the Bronco Raptor 3.0L Oil Capacity
The 2022–2026 Ford Bronco Raptor 3.0L EcoBoost takes 7.0 US quarts, about 6.6 liters, including the oil filter, according to Ford’s current Motorcraft reference. That amount is different from the standard 2.7L Bronco’s six-quart refill.
Ford’s 2026 Bronco technical specifications also list 7.0 quarts for the Raptor 3.0L. The Raptor was introduced for the 2022 model year, so a 2021 Raptor capacity does not belong in the modern Bronco chart.
The current Motorcraft application chart identifies FL-2062-A as the oil filter for the Bronco Raptor 3.0L. Verify the filter against your VIN when ordering parts, especially if a retailer groups Ranger Raptor and Bronco Raptor products together.
Oil quantity alone is not enough for a correct service. The viscosity and Ford material specification must match the engine’s model year.
Which Oil Grade Meets Ford Bronco Specifications
The 2021–2026 full-size Bronco engines covered here use SAE 5W-30 as the standard specified engine-oil viscosity in Ford’s published US references. The Ford WSS approval is equally important: the same viscosity printed on a bottle does not, by itself, verify that oil meets the required standard.
For 2021–2025 Broncos, published owner’s manuals specify WSS-M2C961-A1 for SAE 5W-30. Ford’s 2026 owner’s manual specifies WSS-M2C971-A1 for SAE 5W-30, including the 3.0L Raptor. Motorcraft’s July 2026 reference also uses WSS-M2C971-A1 as its updated 5W-30 reference across the listed applications.
The 2026 Bronco 3.0L owner’s-manual specification confirms that model-year requirement. For an older Bronco, check the bottle’s Ford approval against the manual and any Ford-approved replacement specification, not the viscosity alone.
Extreme Cold Weather Oil
Ford also provides an SAE 0W-30 alternative for extremely cold conditions, typically where ambient temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C) or lower. Older manuals list WSS-M2C963-A1 for this alternative; the 2026 manual uses WSS-M2C973-A1.
This is a condition-specific recommendation, not a reason to substitute 0W-30 during normal weather. Check the climate notes in your particular owner’s manual before switching grades.

How to Check Bronco Oil Level After a Refill

Use the Bronco’s dipstick to confirm the final oil level after changing the oil and filter. A published capacity tells you the expected service refill, but it cannot replace an actual level check after the oil has drained back into the pan.
- Park on level ground. Make sure the Bronco is secure, and follow the engine-off safety instructions in the owner’s manual.
- Allow oil to settle. Ford’s 2026 procedure says to check before starting the engine or wait 15 minutes after shutting down a warmed engine. Check your model-year procedure if it differs.
- Remove and wipe the dipstick. Use a clean, lint-free cloth so the first oil smear does not distort your reading.
- Reinsert it fully and check again. The oil should read between the minimum and maximum marks. Add the correct oil gradually if it is below the specified range.
- Avoid overfilling. Stop at the proper level, replace the dipstick and filler cap securely, and check for leaks after the filter-change procedure.
If you cannot get a consistent dipstick reading, do not guess from the amount remaining in a bottle. Ask a Ford technician to confirm the applicable fill and checking instructions.
After maintenance, reset the oil-life indicator only when the required service is complete. Our guide to the Ford Change Engine Oil Soon warning and oil-life monitor explains the reminder separately from the engine’s actual oil quantity.
Why Bronco Sport Requires a Different Oil Chart
The Bronco Sport is not the full-size Bronco. The Sport uses a different platform and engine lineup, including 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost applications. Do not transfer the full-size Bronco’s 2.3L, 2.7L or 3.0L oil capacities to a Bronco Sport.
If your SUV is a Sport, first confirm its engine and model year using its own owner’s manual. Our Ford Bronco vs Bronco Sport comparison explains why the two models should be treated separately. Classic Broncos from before the 2021 relaunch are also outside the scope of this chart.
Which Oil Capacity Should Your Bronco Use
The right Ford Bronco oil capacity chart entry matches your model year, engine and current Ford service guidance. In Motorcraft’s July 2026 service chart, 2021–2024 2.3L engines require 6.0 quarts, while 2025–2026 2.3L engines require 5.6. The 2.7L uses 6.0 quarts, and the 2022–2026 Raptor 3.0L uses 7.0 quarts, all with a new filter.
Early 2021–2022 publications sometimes show higher numbers. Do not ignore that discrepancy, but do not use it as permission to overfill your engine. Confirm the correct reference for your VIN, select oil meeting Ford’s approval, and finish the job by checking the level on the dipstick. Those three checks matter more than buying an extra bottle to match a generic list.
5 Ford Bronco Oil Capacity Questions Answered
How Many Quarts of Oil Does a Ford Bronco Take
For 2026, the full-size Bronco takes 5.6 quarts with the 2.3L engine, 6.0 with the 2.7L, or 7.0 with the 3.0L Raptor engine, including the oil filter. Earlier model years are listed in the chart above and may have different specifications.
How Much Oil Does a Bronco 2.3L EcoBoost Take
Motorcraft’s current service chart specifies 6.0 quarts including the filter for 2021–2024 Broncos with the 2.3L EcoBoost. The 2025–2026 2.3L figure is 5.6 quarts, so identify the year before purchasing the oil and filter.
Does a 2022 Bronco 2.7L Take 6 or 7 Quarts
The early 2022 owner’s manual listed 7.0 quarts, while Ford’s current Motorcraft service-refill reference specifies 6.0 quarts with the filter. Because both numbers appear in Ford publications, confirm the applicable instructions for your VIN and dipstick rather than automatically using the larger amount.
How Much Oil Does a Bronco Raptor 3.0L Take
The 2022–2026 Bronco Raptor with the 3.0L EcoBoost uses 7.0 US quarts, approximately 6.6 liters, for a service refill with a new filter. This does not apply to the standard 2.7L EcoBoost Bronco, which has a different listed capacity.
Does the Ford Bronco Need Synthetic 5W-30 Oil
Ford specifies SAE 5W-30 meeting the relevant Ford WSS approval; the requirement is more specific than the word “synthetic” on a label. Earlier Bronco publications recommended Motorcraft synthetic-blend 5W-30, while newer documentation identifies updated WSS approvals. Use an approved oil that meets the specification for your vehicle.
