Ford Ranger Oil Capacity Chart By Year & Engine (1998–2026)
The Ford Ranger oil capacity chart depends on your truck’s model year and engine, not simply the Ranger name. For example, a 2019 Ranger 2.3L EcoBoost takes 6.2 US quarts (5.9 liters) with a new filter, a 2024 2.3L takes 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters), and a 2025 or 2026 2.3L takes 5.6 quarts (5.3 liters).
Older Rangers use several different four-cylinder and V6 engines, each with its own refill amount. Use the US-market tables below to match your year and engine before buying oil or starting an oil change. Every listed capacity includes an oil filter change.

1983 exception: Ford service bulletin 83-16-22 corrected the first-printing 1983 owner’s guide. It specified 6.0 quarts for the 1983 2.3L and 5.0 quarts for the 1983 2.0L, both with a filter change. This corrects a commonly repeated one-size-fits-all 5-quart figure for early 2.3L Rangers. The archived Ford service bulletin explains the revision.
2001 transition: Some 2001 Rangers have the earlier 2.5L engine, while others use the newer 2.3L DOHC engine. Their capacities differ by 0.5 quart. Check the underhood emissions label or engine identification before choosing a row.
US-market production gap: The original Ranger ended after 2011, and the nameplate returned to the US market for 2019. This chart does not apply to international diesel Rangers sold during 2012–2018 or to their engine specifications.
How Much Oil Do 2019 to 2023 Rangers Need
The US-market 2019–2023 Ford Ranger 2.3L EcoBoost takes 6.2 quarts (5.9 liters) with the oil filter replaced. All five model years use this engine capacity, despite changes to the oil specification over the production run.
Ford’s 2019 Ranger owner’s manual lists 6.2 quarts under engine oil capacity and specifies SAE 5W-30. This figure is for the turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost, not the older naturally aspirated 2.3L Duratec that takes 4.0 quarts.
Oil approval matters as much as the amount. The 2019–2020 owner’s manuals specify WSS-M2C946-B1, while the 2021–2023 manuals use WSS-M2C961-A1. Always follow the specification for your own model year instead of assuming every 5W-30 oil is interchangeable.
What Oil Capacity Do 2024 to 2026 Rangers Have
The redesigned US Ranger has three engine choices across this period: 2.3L, 2.7L, and the Raptor’s 3.0L EcoBoost. The largest potential mistake is treating all newer 2.3L Rangers as having the same refill capacity.
2.3L EcoBoost Oil Capacity
The 2024 Ranger 2.3L takes 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters) with a new filter. Ford’s 2024 Ranger owner’s manual lists that amount under the 2.3L engine oil specifications.
The 2025 and 2026 Ranger 2.3L take 5.6 quarts (5.3 liters) with a filter change. Ford’s later model-year manuals specify the lower amount. Do not carry the 2024 6.0-quart figure over to a 2025 or 2026 truck.
2.7L EcoBoost Oil Capacity
The available 2.7L EcoBoost V6 takes 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters) for 2024, 2025, and 2026. Check your truck’s engine identification because a Ranger XLT or Lariat badge does not by itself tell you whether it has the 2.3L or 2.7L engine.
The 2.7L calls for SAE 5W-30, but the Ford WSS approval differs between the 2024–2025 and 2026 manuals. Match the oil label to the manual for your year.
3.0L Ranger Raptor Oil Capacity
The 2024–2026 Ranger Raptor 3.0L EcoBoost takes 7.0 quarts (6.62 liters) with a new oil filter. This is one quart more than the 2.7L and should not be confused with specifications for international Ranger diesels.
Ford’s 2026 Ranger owner’s manual lists the 2.3L, 2.7L, and 3.0L capacities separately. It also confirms SAE 5W-30 meeting WSS-M2C971-A1 for all three gasoline engine options in 2026.
Ford Ranger Oil Filter Part Numbers
An engine’s capacity assumes the correct replacement oil filter, and Ford changed the 2.3L filter listing after 2024. These Motorcraft numbers come from the parts tables in the respective Ford owner manuals:
| Model Year | Engine | Motorcraft Oil Filter |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 2.3L EcoBoost | FL-910-S |
| 2025–2026 | 2.3L EcoBoost | FL-2127 |
| 2024–2026 | 2.7L and 3.0L EcoBoost | FL-2062-A |
These are year-and-engine-specific references, not universal Ranger filters. Check the latest Ford parts catalog or your VIN before purchasing because part numbers and supersessions can change.
How Much Oil Do 1983 to 2011 Rangers Need
Older Rangers use a wider range of engines, and several similarly named engines have different oil capacities. A four-cylinder badge is not enough information to select the refill amount.
Four Cylinder Ranger Engines
The 2.0L four-cylinder commonly takes 5.0 quarts, while the early 2.3L SOHC generally takes 5.0 quarts after the special 1983 application. The 2.5L four-cylinder introduced for 1998 takes 4.5 quarts.
The later 2.3L DOHC Duratec, used from the 2001 transition through 2011, takes only 4.0 quarts. Ford’s 2005 and 2011 owner manuals confirm that figure. It is easy to buy too much oil if you mistake this engine for the earlier 2.3L SOHC or the newer turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost.
For 2001, engine identification is particularly valuable. The 2.5L and 2.3L were both associated with that model year, but their oil-change refill amounts are not the same.
V6 Ranger Engines
The older 2.8L and 2.9L V6 are commonly listed at 5.0 quarts with a new filter. The 3.0L V6 takes 4.5 quarts, supported by Ford’s 1996, 2000, and 2005 capacity references.
Both the 4.0L OHV V6 and later 4.0L SOHC V6 use 5.0 quarts for the listed Ranger applications. Their valve-train designs differ, but the oil-change capacity is the same in the relevant Ford specifications.
Oil viscosities also changed across these generations. Avoid applying the 2011 Ranger’s 5W-20 recommendation for its 2.3L to a 1996 Ranger simply because both engines have a 2.3L designation.
Which Ford Ranger Oil Grade and WSS Spec Apply
Oil capacity tells you how much to add; the SAE grade and Ford WSS specification tell you which oil to use. Two products can both say 5W-30 yet meet different Ford requirements.
For the modern US Ranger, the key specifications are:
| Model Year | Engine | Normal SAE Grade | Ford WSS Approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019–2020 | 2.3L EcoBoost | 5W-30 | WSS-M2C946-B1 |
| 2021–2023 | 2.3L EcoBoost | 5W-30 | WSS-M2C961-A1 |
| 2024–2025 | 2.3L, 2.7L, 3.0L EcoBoost | 5W-30 | WSS-M2C961-A1 |
| 2026 | 2.3L, 2.7L, 3.0L EcoBoost | 5W-30 | WSS-M2C971-A1 |
Do not assume those approvals are identical. Ford published different WSS codes for different model years, even when SAE viscosity stayed at 5W-30. Our Ford engine oil recommendation chart explains how Ford oil standards work across its engine range.
For older Rangers, oil grade depends on the specific engine and year. Ford’s 2000 Ranger manual specifies SAE 5W-30 for its engines. The 2005 manual specifies SAE 5W-20 for the 2.3L and 3.0L, while its 4.0L uses SAE 5W-30. The 2011 manual lists WSS-M2C930-A for the 2.3L 5W-20 oil and WSS-M2C929-A for the 4.0L 5W-30 oil.
Ford also specifies a very-cold-climate alternative for newer engines. In 2024–2025, that alternative is SAE 0W-30 meeting WSS-M2C963-A1 at approximately -22°F (-30°C) or below. The 2026 manual uses WSS-M2C973-A1 for its SAE 0W-30 alternative. This is a conditional recommendation, not a reason to switch oil grades during ordinary weather.
How to Check Ford Ranger Oil Level After Refilling

Treat the chart capacity as the specified filter-change refill, not permission to pour the entire quantity into the engine without checking the final level. The actual amount needed can differ slightly because some old oil remains after draining.
- Identify the engine. Confirm your Ranger’s model year, engine size, and appropriate chart row before opening the oil container.
- Replace the oil filter. Make sure the replacement fits that engine and model year. The stated capacities include the filter change.
- Refill carefully. Add most of the specified amount first, holding back a little for the final level adjustment.
- Check for leaks. After installing the filter and drain plug according to the model-specific procedure, run the engine briefly and inspect for leaks.
- Wait before checking. Shut off the engine, park on level ground, and follow your owner’s manual’s oil-settling instructions. Ford’s 2011 Ranger manual specifies a 15-minute wait for its dipstick procedure.
- Read the oil level. Remove, wipe, fully reinsert, and remove the dipstick again. Add small amounts if needed, stopping within the marked acceptable range.
- Reset the oil-life monitor if equipped. On 2026 Rangers, use the instrument-cluster menu’s Vehicle Maintenance and Oil Life settings only after the oil and filter have been changed.
Never fill past the dipstick’s maximum mark. A full oil container is not evidence that your engine needs all of it. Confirm the level and inspect again after a short drive.
If you see a maintenance alert, our guide to the Ford Change Engine Oil Soon warning explains what the reminder means. It is separate from a low-oil-pressure warning, which requires immediate attention.
How to Choose the Correct Ranger Oil Capacity
The correct Ford Ranger oil capacity chart entry is the one matching your exact model year and engine. A 2024 Ranger 2.3L uses 6.0 quarts, while the 2025 and 2026 versions use 5.6 quarts. Older four-cylinder Rangers can range from 4.0 to 6.0 quarts depending on engine and year, including the unusual 1983 2.3L service-bulletin correction.
Choose an oil that meets your model-year SAE and Ford WSS requirements. Replace the correct filter, refill carefully, and use the dipstick and your owner’s manual to confirm the finished level. If your truck has a replacement engine or nonstandard oil system, verify its specific requirements rather than relying solely on its original model year.
Common Ford Ranger Oil Capacity Questions Answered
How Many Quarts of Oil Does a Ford Ranger 2.3 Take
It depends on which 2.3L engine and year you have. The 2001–2011 Duratec takes 4.0 quarts, the 2019–2023 EcoBoost takes 6.2 quarts, the 2024 EcoBoost takes 6.0 quarts, and the 2025–2026 EcoBoost takes 5.6 quarts, each with a new filter. Early SOHC engines have other figures, including a special 1983 correction.
How Much Oil Does a 2025 Ford Ranger Need
A 2025 Ranger 2.3L takes 5.6 quarts, a 2.7L takes 6.0 quarts, and a 3.0L Ranger Raptor takes 7.0 quarts, all including the filter. Use SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 for these US gasoline engines.
What Is the Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0 Oil Capacity
The US-market 2024–2026 Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0L EcoBoost takes 7.0 US quarts (6.62 liters) with a filter replacement. Do not substitute a capacity from a diesel Ranger Raptor sold outside North America.
Does Ford Ranger Oil Capacity Include the Filter
Yes. Every value in the charts above is an oil-change capacity including a new oil filter. If you are only topping up, add oil based on the current dipstick level rather than pouring in the full listed capacity.
Can I Use 5W-30 in Every Ford Ranger Engine
No. Although modern US Ranger EcoBoost engines use SAE 5W-30, many older Rangers require a different grade, including 5W-20 for the 2011 2.3L engine. Even when 5W-30 is correct, match the Ford WSS specification in your exact owner’s manual.
