Ford’s original 2022 specification confirms 98 kWh usable energy, 452 hp, and 230 miles for the Standard Range configuration. The 131 kWh Extended Range version produced 580 hp and reached 320 miles in XLT and Lariat form, while Platinum was rated at 300 miles.
The 2023 technical specification retained the same 98 and 131 kWh battery capacities but increased the Standard Range EPA rating to 240 miles. Extended Range remained 320 miles for XLT and Lariat and 300 miles for Platinum.
For 2024, Ford kept the 98 and 131 kWh packs but shortened its published 15 to 80 percent DC fast-charge estimates to 32 and 38 minutes. The 131 kWh Flash and Lariat were rated at 320 miles, while Platinum remained at 300 miles.

What Are the 3 Ford Lightning Battery Sizes
The three numbers describe usable energy, not an estimated gross pack capacity. That distinction matters because usable energy is the portion Ford makes available to the truck for driving and vehicle functions.
98 kWh Standard Range
The 98 kWh battery was the original Standard Range pack. Ford paired it with dual electric motors producing 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque.

This means a later Flash should not automatically be described as having the same 131 kWh pack used by a 2024 Flash.
131 kWh Extended Range
The 131 kWh Extended Range battery was Ford’s largest confirmed usable-capacity pack in the production Lightning.
It produces 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque in Ford’s specifications. Depending on trim, EPA range reached 320 miles. Platinum was typically rated at 300 miles because its configuration carries additional equipment and larger wheels.
That difference is why identifying a Lightning by the words “Extended Range” alone is no longer enough.

How Fast Does Each Lightning Battery Charge
Charging specifications changed during the Lightning’s production run, so one universal charge-time figure is inaccurate.
2022 and 2023 Charging Times
Ford’s early specification estimated these 150 kW DC fast-charging times from 15 to 80 percent:

The larger battery could post a shorter 15 to 80 percent estimate because early Extended Range trucks supported different charging hardware and onboard charging capability. Ford listed an onboard charger of 19.2 kW input and 17.6 kW output for the 131 kWh version, compared with 11.3 kW and 10.5 kW for Standard Range.

Ford’s charging FAQ confirms approximately 32 minutes for 2024 and 2025 Standard Range, 38 minutes for the 131 kWh Extended Range, and 38 minutes for the 2025 Flash 123 kWh battery.

What Battery Chemistry Does the F150 Lightning Use
Ford identifies the F-150 Lightning’s Standard Range and Extended Range batteries as Nickel Cobalt Manganese batteries, usually shortened to NCM.
The published technical specifications describe the battery as a lithium-ion pouch pack with internal battery management and liquid cooling. That description appears in both the original 2022 specifications and Ford’s 2025 specification sheet.
Liquid cooling allows the battery thermal-management system to control pack temperature during driving and charging.

Ford’s original 2022 technical documentation published the same 8-year, 100,000-mile period and 70 percent minimum capacity provision.
That makes battery state of health especially relevant when shopping for an older Lightning approaching higher mileage.
What Happened to the 2026 Ford Lightning Lineup
The 2026 situation needs to be separated from the confirmed 2022 through 2025 battery chart.
Ford’s current F-150 Lightning page says the truck is no longer available in its current form and can no longer be ordered as the existing battery-electric Lightning. Ford says support, software updates, service, and replacement parts for existing trucks will continue.
Ford also says the next-generation Lightning will use Extended Range Electric Vehicle technology, or EREV. In this layout, an electric powertrain remains central to propulsion while an onboard generator can extend driving range. Ford has not announced a specific launch date for that next-generation truck.

How to Tell Which Lightning Battery You Have
Do not identify your battery from the Lightning badge or trim name alone. The Flash is the clearest reason because a 2024 Flash and a 2025 Flash can have different published usable battery capacities.
Use these four checks instead.
- Check the model year. A 2022 or 2023 Lightning uses the 98 kWh or 131 kWh configuration. The 123 kWh pack appears in Ford’s later documentation.
- Check the trim and original equipment. Platinum trucks use the larger Extended Range configuration, while lower trims varied more by year.
- Check the original window sticker or build information. Look for Standard Range Battery, Extended Range Battery, or the battery-related equipment description.
- Compare the original EPA rating. A 240-mile rating strongly points toward the later 98 kWh Standard Range configuration. A 2025 Flash rated at 300 miles corresponds to Ford’s 123 kWh pack, while a 320-mile 2025 Lariat corresponds to the 131 kWh pack.
For used-truck shoppers, verifying the model year and original factory configuration is safer than trusting a dealer listing that simply says “Extended Range.”
