Ford F250 Differential Fluid Capacity Chart: 2017-2026 Year and Axle

Ford F250 differential fluid capacity depends on the model year, axle size, front or rear position, and differential type. There is no single fluid capacity that applies to every F-250.

For example, Ford lists a 2.7-quart front axle capacity on a 2017 Super Duty, while the 10.5-inch rear axle takes 3.3 to 3.6 quarts depending on whether the truck has an electronic locking differential. Newer Super Duty trucks use additional axle sizes with capacities ranging above 4 quarts.

Before You Add Fluid

1 Identify the Axle

Check the driver’s door AXLE code. Confirm the housing if the axle may have been replaced.

2 Match the Gear Oil

Use the correct viscosity and Ford fluid specification for your model year and installed axle.

3 Fill to Specification

Follow Ford’s fill-level procedure. Do not force in every quart of oil you purchased.

Limited-Slip Note: Ford’s 2024 9.25-inch limited-slip front axle requires 4.4 fl oz (130 mL) of specified friction modifier as part of the total 2.20 qt fill. Do not add it on top of the stated capacity.

2024Rear11.6 inch with other listed ratios4.33 to 4.44 qt / 4.1 to 4.2 LSAE 75W-140

Ford’s 2017 manual lists 2.7 quarts for the front axle, 3.3 to 3.5 quarts for a 10.5-inch E-Locker, 3.5 to 3.6 quarts for a non-E-Locker, and 3.61 quarts for the Dana M275.

The 2019 manual shows the same basic figures for those configurations. It also identifies 80W-90 for the front axle, 75W-85 for the 10.5-inch rear, and 75W-140 for the Dana M275.

For 2024, Ford publishes separate specifications for 9.25-inch and 10.08-inch front axles plus several rear axle families. That is why you should never choose differential fluid quantity from the words “Ford F-250” alone.

Older F-250 generations also use different axle assemblies. If your truck falls outside the documented combinations above, verify the axle code and use the owner’s manual or Ford service information for that exact model year rather than extrapolating a newer capacity.

How Much Front Differential Fluid Does an F250 Take

A Ford F-250 front differential generally takes less fluid than the rear axle, but the exact amount changes with the front axle design.

Ford’s 2017 Super Duty manual specifies 2.7 quarts or 2.6 liters for the front axle. The manual specifies Motorcraft SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A for that application.

The 2019 Super Duty manual lists the same 2.7-quart front axle capacity and the same SAE 80W-90 specification.

Newer 9.25 Inch Front Axle

For the 2024 Super Duty 9.25-inch front axle, Ford specifies 2.20 quarts or 2.08 liters.

Both limited-slip and non-limited-slip versions use the same total capacity. Ford specifies SAE 80W-90 meeting WSP-M2C197-A.

Newer 10.08 Inch Front Axle

The 2024 10.08-inch front axle takes 2.75 quarts or 2.6 liters.

Ford also specifies SAE 80W-90 for this axle.

If you are unsure what hardware is installed under your truck, the Ford F250 front axle parts diagram can help you understand the front axle assembly before you start a fluid service.

How Much Rear Differential Fluid Does an F250 Take

Recommended Best Deal Products

The rear differential shows more variation than the front because Ford uses several axle families and differential configurations across the Super Duty lineup.

10.5 Inch Rear Axle

The 10.5-inch axle is one of the most common F-250 rear configurations in the documented late-model data.

For 2017, Ford lists:

  • 3.3 to 3.5 quarts with an electronic locking differential
  • 3.5 to 3.6 quarts without an electronic locking differential

The specified lubricant is SAE 75W-85 Premium Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C942-A.

Ford’s 2024 specifications retain the same 3.3 to 3.5 quart range for an electronic locking 10.5-inch rear axle and 3.5 to 3.6 quarts for the non-locking version.

Dana M275 and 10.8 Inch Rear Axle

Ford’s 2017 Super Duty manual lists the Dana M275 at 3.61 quarts or 3.42 liters and specifies SAE 75W-140 synthetic axle lubricant.

Newer Ford documentation labels a 10.8-inch rear axle separately. For the 2024 Super Duty, the open version takes 3.68 quarts or 3.48 liters.

The limited-slip 10.8-inch version has an oil-only quantity of 3.46 quarts or 3.271 liters, with Ford specifying friction modifier as part of a complete refill procedure.

11.6 Inch Rear Axle

The 2024 11.6-inch rear axle has a noticeably larger fluid requirement.

Ford specifies:

  • 4.44 to 4.54 quarts with a 4.30 final drive ratio
  • 4.33 to 4.44 quarts with the listed 3.31, 3.55, or 3.73 ratios

Both use SAE 75W-140 meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A.

This difference is large enough that buying fluid based on a generic F-250 capacity can leave you short or tempt you to overfill the axle.

How to Identify Your F250 Axle Before Filling

Ford F250 rear differential housing and axle identification points
Ford F250 rear differential housing and axle identification points.

Before buying differential oil, confirm which axle is actually under your F-250.

The fastest starting point is the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver-side door jamb. Look for the field marked AXLE, then decode the listed code for the truck’s year and configuration.

Our Ford axle code chart covers F-250 and Super Duty axle codes and helps identify the gear ratio and differential type.

After decoding the label, confirm whether the truck has an open, limited-slip, or electronic locking differential. This matters because even two 10.5-inch rear axles can have different published fill ranges.

If the axle has been replaced at some point, the door sticker may no longer describe what is physically under the truck. In that case, check the axle tag, housing, cover shape, and part identification before choosing a capacity.

What Differential Fluid Does a Ford F250 Use

Recommended Best Deal Products

Ford does not specify one differential oil viscosity for every F-250.

Late-model Super Duty data shows three common viscosities.

Axle ApplicationFluidFord Specification
2017 and 2019 front axleSAE 80W-90WSP-M2C197-A
2017 and newer 10.5 rearSAE 75W-85WSS-M2C942-A
Dana M275 and newer 10.8 rearSAE 75W-140WSL-M2C192-A
2024 11.6 rearSAE 75W-140WSL-M2C192-A

Ford’s 2017 specifications directly identify SAE 80W-90 for the front axle, SAE 75W-85 for the 10.5-inch rear, and SAE 75W-140 for the Dana M275.

The 2024 Ford manual follows the same general pattern for these axle families.

Match the Ford specification number, not only the viscosity printed on the bottle. Two oils can share the same SAE grade while meeting different manufacturer requirements.

When Does an F250 Need Friction Modifier

Friction modifier is required only on specific limited-slip axle configurations. It should not be automatically added to every F-250 differential.

For the 2024 9.25-inch front axle with limited slip, Ford specifies 4.4 fluid ounces or 130 ml of XL-3 friction modifier or an equivalent meeting EST-M2C118-A. Ford states that the modifier is included in the total 2.20-quart lubricant volume.

For the 2024 10.8-inch limited-slip rear axle, Ford specifies 7.06 fluid ounces or 208.8 ml for a complete refill.

Other rear axle families can require different quantities. The 2024 11.8-inch limited-slip axle, for example, calls for 8.07 fluid ounces, while the 12.4-inch limited-slip axle calls for 9.49 fluid ounces.

Use the requirement for your exact axle. Adding modifier unnecessarily can change clutch behavior and should not replace using the correct Ford-approved gear oil.

How Many Quarts Should You Buy for an F250

Buy enough fluid to cover the published capacity with a small margin, but do not pour the entire purchased quantity into the differential.

A practical shopping guide looks like this:

Published CapacityReasonable Amount to Buy
2.20 qt3 one-quart bottles
2.70 to 2.75 qt3 one-quart bottles
3.3 to 3.6 qt4 one-quart bottles
3.68 to 3.8 qt4 one-quart bottles
4.3 to 4.6 qt5 one-quart bottles

The extra fluid gives you enough for small losses during pumping and filling. The published capacity remains the reference, not the amount you happen to purchase.

Before draining the differential, make sure you can remove the fill plug. Our guide to rear differential fill plug location explains where to look and why opening the fill plug first can prevent a simple service from becoming a stranded-truck problem.

Aftermarket deep differential covers can also change the amount of oil the housing holds. If your truck has a non-stock cover, follow the cover manufacturer’s fill procedure rather than assuming the factory volume still applies.

Match Your F250 Axle Before Adding Fluid

The correct Ford F250 differential fluid capacity comes from matching the model year, axle position, axle size, and differential type.

A late-model front differential may take 2.20 to 2.75 quarts, while common rear configurations range from roughly 3.3 quarts to more than 4.5 quarts. Ford also specifies different gear oils for different axle families.

Check your axle code first, confirm the physical axle if the truck may have been modified, then use the exact Ford specification for that configuration. That approach is safer than treating every F-250 as if it uses the same three or four quarts of gear oil.

Ford F250 Differential Fluid Capacity FAQ

How Many Quarts Does an F250 Rear Differential Take

A Ford F-250 rear differential can take roughly 3.3 to more than 4.5 quarts depending on the axle. For example, Ford lists 3.3 to 3.6 quarts for the 2024 10.5-inch axle and up to 4.54 quarts for some 11.6-inch configurations.

How Much Fluid Does an F250 Front Differential Take

Late-model F-250 front differential capacities commonly fall around 2.2 to 2.75 quarts in documented Ford specifications. The 2017 front axle takes 2.7 quarts, while the 2024 9.25-inch and 10.08-inch axles take 2.20 and 2.75 quarts respectively.

What Differential Fluid Does a Ford F250 Use

It depends on the axle. Ford specifies SAE 80W-90 for several front axles, SAE 75W-85 for the 10.5-inch rear axle, and SAE 75W-140 for axles such as the Dana M275 and newer 10.8-inch units.
