Ford’s 2010 owner guide lists 5.5 quarts, and the 2011 guide lists the same figure for both V6 engines. The 2012 guide lists 6.0 quarts for the 3.5L and 3.7L, and 6.0 stays through 2018.
Ford’s 2011 and 2012 guides disagree for the same engines. If you own a 2011 Edge, confirm the level on the dipstick after filling.

- Check the model year and trim. The 3.5L was sold from 2007 to 2018 and the 3.7L from 2011 to 2014. The 2.7L ran from 2015 to 2024, on the Sport and later the ST.

- Compare the engine bay. Ford’s 2024 owner manual has separate Under Hood Overview pages for the 2.0L and 2.7L.
The 2.0L EcoBoost appears in Ford’s owner guides from the 2012 model year onward.

3 Oil Spec Changes That Affect Your Ford Edge Year by Year

Ford changed the Edge oil specification three times between 2007 and 2024. The grade on the bottle must match the code for your year.
- 2012 split the grades by engine. Through 2011 the V6 used 5W-20 to WSS-M2C930-A. From 2012 the V6 moved to 5W-20 to WSS-M2C945-A, and the 2.0L and later the 2.7L used 5W-30 to WSS-M2C946-A.
- 2019 moved the 5W-30 engines to a new code. The 2019 manual lists WSS-M2C946-B1 for the 2.0L and 2.7L, and the 2020 manual keeps it.
- 2021 introduced WSS-M2C961-A1. Ford’s 2021 manual lists it for both engines, and the 2024 manual repeats it.
For extreme cold, Ford’s 2021 and later manuals also list 0W-30 to WSS-M2C963-A1. Ford recommends it where temperatures reach -22°F (-30°C) or below.
Ford warns that oil outside the listed spec and viscosity can cause warranty-excluded component damage, longer cranking and lower fuel economy. Other models use different codes, so check our Ford engine oil recommendation chart for anything that is not an Edge.

How To Check and Fill Oil Without Overfilling Your Ford Edge

Treat the chart figure as the target and the dipstick as the final check. Ford’s 2024 owner manual sets out this procedure.
- Park on level ground. Ford’s procedure starts here.
- Wait for the oil to drain back. Check before starting the engine, or shut it off after warm-up and wait 15 minutes.
- Wipe and reseat the dipstick. Wipe it clean, push it in fully, then pull it out again.
- Read both sides. Use the lower reading as the correct one.
- Add only if needed. Between MIN and MAX, do not add oil. At MIN, add oil right away.
- Never pass the MAX mark. Ford says oil above MAX may cause engine damage.
The 15 minute wait matters most on the 2.7L. Ford service bulletin SSM 49477 covers 2015 to 2021 Edge models with this engine that appear low on oil when checked too soon.
The bulletin also says to drain at operating temperature with the filter removed first, then let the pan drain for up to five minutes.
Filling correctly matters even more if you stretch the interval.
How Often Should You Change Oil in a Ford Edge
The Edge tells you. Ford’s 2024 manual says the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows a message at an interval of up to one year or 10,000 miles, and you should change the oil within two weeks or 500 miles of it.

Ford also lists conditions that raise oil use. These include high loads, extended high engine speeds, hard cornering, track use and off-road use. Under those conditions the manual says consumption of about 1 quart per 500 miles is possible, and it advises checking the level at every refueling.

One documented problem is worth knowing. Ford TSB 19-2243 covers 2016 to 2017 Edge models with the 2.7L built from April 1, 2016 through January 1, 2017. It describes smoke, rough idle and oil use of a quart in under 3,000 miles.
